Angel of the Stone

2024 _ Indian Ink on Paper

Context & Symbology

Long before the monks sat in cold stone towers to paint the brilliant pages of the Book of Kells, the people of Ireland looked to the sky to understand the rhythm of their lives. They crafted the lunula, a crescent of hammered gold worn gracefully around the neck, to mirror the shape of the moon. It was a symbol of the quiet night, the resting earth, and the gentle, silver light that guides us through the dark. When angels were later drawn into the great manuscripts, they were not just distant heavenly messengers; they were protectors of a fragile light in a harsh world, carrying the deep memory of the land in their intricately woven wings.

This ancient need to hold onto the light is a story told across the world. From the golden sun disks of early civilisations to the radiant halos of saints, the rising sun is a universal echo of hope, dawn, and the awakening of the spirit. Yet, the sun cannot exist without the moon, just as the waking day requires the resting night. Throughout human history, the greatest stories of personal transformation—often captured in the old legends of alchemy and the search for the philosopher's stone—are about finding the perfect balance between these opposing forces. It is the deep, shared human desire to take the raw, scattered pieces of our lives and weave them into something whole, discovering a quiet harmony between the bright sky and the heavy earth.

This timeless balance is beautifully brought to life in the artwork. The figure stands in perfect stillness, echoing the iconic, woven angels of Ireland's oldest illuminated manuscripts. Above the bowed, peaceful face radiates a brilliant halo or sun disk, capturing the warmth and certainty of the morning sun. Resting gently around the neck is the curved, crescent shape of the lunula, honouring the quiet power of the moon. Held carefully at the centre of the deeply patterned wings is the geometric symbol of the philosopher's stone—a triangle, circle, and square nestled seamlessly together. This intricate heart reveals a profound, quiet revelation: true transformation does not come from escaping the natural world, but from holding the bright dawn and the heavy, restful night in perfect, breathing balance.
